Now 19, Maddie is a freshman in college and on her own. She's your average girl--timid, coffee-loving, and a fan of Harry Potter and dogs. Struggling to find her footing, she tries on new identities that bring her into situations she never would have gotten into before--college parties, hook-ups, bad boys and more that leaves her spiraling and desperate for answers.

We've always been told to think before we speak, so as not to offend anyone. Maddie Hayes is over it. No matter what is said, someone is going to get offended. She just doesn't care anymore. For someone who grew up with five older siblings, Maddie has never felt more alone. Now that they're all out of the house and starting their own families, that loneliness has manifested into anger at the feeling of being abandoned. Madeline was never supposed to be the 'good girl'. From the years of sarcasm, she's learned from watching her older siblings, Maddie is 'that girl,' the girl that everyone envies, who can make you cry with just a look. But maybe her life isn't so great as she wants everyone to believe. Maybe she's tired of being forgotten by her older siblings; maybe she's angry because her parents work too much or that her friends would never actually be there for her if things got tough. The two fellow students meet on a bus when Harry notices a stranger following her, and he walks her home to make sure she's safe. Months later, when she learns about his diagnosis, Evie returns the favor in the only way that makes sense: by marrying him. It's meant to be just on paper. She's merely helping him out financially through her mom's health insurance plan. Neither of them expects this simple favor to come with growing worry that turns into a reluctant friendship, which then spirals completely out of control before either can stop it.
