Elementals have not always walked the earth. There used to be only one race that could manipulate the forces of fire, earth, water, and air. The gems, they were called. But they were few, and their existence was brief. They were reduced to one: Ember, the great Elemental Mother. It was Ember who gifted all the first elementals with their powers, but she was betrayed and struck down. Her soul was imprisoned in a gemstone, leaving her creations lost and leaderless.

Many centuries have passed and the Elemental Mother's followers are still waiting for their savior, the legendary Child of Ember, to rise up and free their matriarch. Among them are two slaves, Lilly Thompson and Kit Willis. They live under completely different masters, but their lives are soon to come crashing together, setting themselves on a course towards an intertwined destiny that neither could have possibly prepared for.
