It's amazing what fresh air, nature's beauty, and a starry sky can do to clear the cobwebs from one's mind. It has been years since I saw the Milky Way, and even longer since I canoed in northern Ontario. One week of wilderness camping in Georgian Bay is sufficient to set me off on a mission to save mother earth. It's as if nature and the universe conspired to spur me into action. There's not a lot that can freak me out in this world. Only large animals with sharp claws, too many people touching me, bullies, hives, horror movies, sitting underneath fans or lights or anything that dangles from a ceiling, glass or wooden bridges, my mother, mosquitoes, public situations, taking a shower with nobody in the house, taking a shower with too many people in the house and crocks. Oh, and zombies. Zombies is definitely on that list. It's almost a shame too, that I have to race through a city packed full of them to find my missing family. Packed full of zombies, by the way, not crocks. (Although I don't know which situation is worse.) Now I have to not only keep my feeble body alive, but also protect (or be protected by) my two best friends in the entire world as we all try to survive in a city packed with the Dead.

We Are Drowning, How Should We Kill Our Time? by outbriefcandle54

This collection of stream of consciousness prose was written during a very special time in my life. I left the city following a massive burnout, and lived in the country for months. I began a garden, cut most of my ties to the outside world, and wrote this as a way to keep me going through most of my days. When I wrote, I felt like this magical sense was taking over me and the words were just flowing out. I have not edited them, because I wanted to keep them as true to the feelings I had then as possible. It was truly a beautiful, transformative time of realizations for me. Thanks for reading this piece of my heart!

Surviving can be difficult when you're only a few inches tall. Fanged beasts see you as their prey, every creature is bigger than you, and the world seems to work against small things. Not to mention the struggles of getting from place to place... but the worst of it all? Humans. Once a year, every year, summer sweeps over the forest. The sun warms the leaves and the damp melts away until the world of the Winged flourishes. Those warm months are when survival becomes the hardest. Drawn by the beauty of the forest, humans of all kind invade the already dangerous home of the small Winged people. Fear of these monsters is shared throughout the tribes. One sacred piece of advice is known: avoid humans at all costs. They know only how to destroy and hurt. ___ Despite the protests of her close friend, Azure accepts a mission that takes her from the safety of her tribe. Things begin well despite her trepidation of the approaching summer months. That is, until she falls right into the hands of the very creatures she feared. ___ Completed! Avani looked at the pizza store in front of her. Many passed by her, giving her glares and weird looks but Avani didn't care. All she could think about was food. And how her own step-mother disowned her. And the nurse's horrified face. And how warm her toes would be if she had just one match. Sighing, she walked to her corner around the garbage dump of a random store and laid down. She shut her eyes, not wanting to open them ever again. -ˋˏ✄┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈┈ Avani was just an ordinary girl, living in an ordinary life That is until she started barfing up garbage, oil, and plastic. Her own step-family left her with no money, no water, nothing to survive. No one wanted her, especially if she was a freak. Pollution, pollution, and pollution. How can you stop that? There's no way. But then, a shiny object dropped from the sky, and that was the answer to her question. But she had a weakness. And that weakness will bring her down, it'll destroy her inside and out. If she doesn't learn to control it, it'll control her. But there was something she didn't get.
