On a mythical island protected by a dome of clouds, eight species of creatures coexist in a realm ruled by Aleuta, a secluded city on the mountain. Bound by blood oaths, on the surface the creatures live peacefully, but underneath they scheme and plot. 
  
When 13-year-old Cloud's friend is accused of stealing from Aleutans, her attempt to save him fails and she is taken to Aleuta, a city until then forbidden to any outsider. As Cloud adjusts to her new life, she uncovers the mystery behind the clouds and ancient, forgotten secrets about life and death  the mountain holds.
