IN 1929, Emilia Ruth Dearing is an eight year girl who moved to the great city of New York City from her home country of Germany. As she leaves her country, she realizes that her father is more rich than she could think of. As she starts school, however, she deals with ridicule because of her speech as she still cannot speak fluent English and she is also bullied because of how rich her father is.

As the year progresses, however, the children become the least of her problems as the Great Depression hits and her father loses his job. Emilia and her family must realize the value of what they have, before it's too late to save any of them.
