Poetry to me as a child was Dr. Seuss, then when I was a teenager it was Edgar Allen Poe and William Shakespeare and as an adult it was Rolling Stones and The Beatles. However one thing it never was, emotional.

Poetry was always a chore to read and never a joy. When I began writing, a professor told me, you are your emotions so use your poetry to display them. Well, to me that made no sense. How can I be an emotion? Then I realized what he meant is that we wear our emotions, we are what our emotions are. So poetry to me has now become my way of showing emotions and sharing my experiences in life.
