During the trying times of the Great Depression in 1930s Liverpool, an upper-class child named William is confronted with the challenge and stresses of feeling controlled by the expectations and the chains determining his path created by his father's vision. One day this all changes when he meets a poor homeless child called Kurtis. Throughout their adventures around the docklands and the attractions of Liverpool, their friendship becomes stronger as they help unlock each other's chains and help each other strive towards their goals and create a new path for them both.

Sarah Anderson and Max Schuller get sent away from London by their families in September 1939 so that they'll be safe from the bombing in the coming war. They get sent to what seems like a quiet sleepy seaside village of Swingate in Dover, where their parents think that they will be safe. But with the Germans only just across the channel, and people acting suspiciously, just how safe actually are they?
