Thousands of years ago, on the mythical island of Okoto. Two mask makers, Ekimu and his brother, Makuta, forged great masks for the residents of Okoto. That was before Makuta's betrayal. His envy towards his brother drove him to a lust for recognition. He soon decided that he would create a mask of awesome power. Makuta forged a mask with all of the elements, breaking an ancient and sacred law. Makuta had created the mask of Ultimate power. Upon donning the mask it corrupted him, the dark energy rocking the island of Okoto to it's very core. Ekimu realized what his brother had done and knocked the mask from his face, releasing a shock wave that disturbed the natural balance and caused a wild explosion that would send both Mask Makers into a deep slumber.

Six elemental heroes, known as the Toa, were summoned to the island to rescue Ekimu and his mask after evil began to grow in strength. having saved the legendary mask maker Ekimu, and his mask, the mask of creation from the clutches of evil, the heroes set out to find the dark and powerful mask of imitation, whilst also forming a second team of heroes, the Toa Koreta.
