November 16, 1794. The snowflakes fell all around me as I exited the cab, the footman taking my hand as he guided me down the steps. Tall building cast dark shadows over me, made with dull, grey stones and bricks, but with glimpses of bright colours in darkened corners. It was beautiful, and little bubbles of excitement began to form in my stomach, while my sisters quietly chatted to each other, leaving me alone as I took in my new surroundings. This was it. This was Moscow, the capital city of Russia. *** Elizabeth Osgood - an unmarried, educated and intelligent young woman from London - is obliged to join her father, a wealthy businessman, on his journey to Moscow while he runs an errand for the British government. For the duration of their visit, they stay at the estate of Sir Eduard Arvoskaya, a consort of Empress Yekaterina, who permits them to stay at his home. At first, it's simply a case of sending messages for her father and studying the country's language and culture in her free time, but she soon finds herself probing deep into a mystery concerning Viktor Braginsky, the mute servant working for Arvoskaya. But she doesn't realise the whole thing - the mystery - is all a game. A game that no one can win. And the price of loosing is death.

This is gripping modern day drama and a political thriller that unfolds in Bulgaria - a little-known European country where ancient rites mingle with current feasts. The country has the dubious distinction as the most loyal of all Soviet allies, a miniature replica of the Soviet Union, where the 'clocks have frozen in time' to quote a well known Bulgarian dissident from the late seventies. Justice comes from unforeseen ways. Ethnic characters bring a unique and picturesque perspective to the unfolding drama, playing second fiddle, sometimes beating the drums and setting the rhythm. In a parallel universe some of the action takes place in the second major city of Plovdiv and its immediate mountain vicinity. While the ways and means of the local political 'tigress' follow in the steps of her highly placed Sofia political patron, she brings some unexpected twists in the fox chase game, and proving to be a cunning and deadly enemy nonetheless. The story branches to a small village in the same area, just a stone's throw, away from the Greek border. There a young man comes of age in the mythical mountain, the birthplace of Orpheus, Bacchus, and many others. Later on the same village, with its ancient history deeply rooted in the daily life of its inhabitants, becomes a scene of clashes and renewed violence, a place where honor, dignity and pride collide with brutal present day events, forcing serious decisions, thus repeating ancient history. The tigress later seals the young man's fate as she eliminates some live hurdles at the opportune moment in a brilliantly conceived and executed operation. This operation involves among other things, illicit smuggling, treachery and violence, while bringing unexpected justice to some nefarious characters. The last storyline takes place around the ancient resort city of Varna, on the Black Sea coast, ruled by a promiscuous first secretary and his equally unscrupulous, profligate wife.
