In the distant future, America has been destroyed and is replaced with a nation called Panem: 12 unfortunate districts surrounding a shining Capitol.
Connor Franta is a citizen of District 8: Home of the Textiles. All he has ever cared about was bringing enough money home from his job as a factory worker to put food on the table for his family of four. And when its time for the dreaded Reaping, he hopes for it to all be over, so that his family can be safe for another normal year. All Connor ever wanted was for everything to be normal.
But the odds aren't always in everyone's favor.
So when Nicola Franta, Connor's beloved sister, gets randomly picked to be District 8's tribute in the 73th Hunger Games, what could Connor do but step up to take her place? And to make things worse, Connor's partner is the infamous Troye Mellet: A mysterious, alluring boy with a vicious instinct to kill.
But he didn't matter to Connor, right? Connor had enough problems, after all, such as surviving. But Connor never knew that Troye would become his biggest problem.
Troye Mellet was out to destroy him. In more ways than one.

Troye Mellet is not popular. He's middle class in the teenage hierarchy and the head of the bitter kids. Cocky "populars" and superficial teens are his enemies, and high-school society his hell. But, behind the social ruse that is his hatred, there is a deep sadness. Loneliness; bottled and festering into complete misery. Connor Franta is popular, and he is weighed down by that label. He's the shyest one of his group, the vulnerable one, the easiest one to tease. Terrified of losing his "friends," even with their constant bullying, Connor's life is a whirlwind of anxiety. He's miserable, but the idea of sitting alone at lunch shakes him to his core. When a group of underdog teachers notice their unfortunate similarities, these seemingly polar opposites are brought together. Both boys find life-altering answers, love and comfort within a person they've been trained to hate. After all, since when did the truest kind of love care about status? Seventy-four years has been long enough. The way of the infamous Hunger Games has been altered. No longer is every Gamemaker out to devise the worst means of torture and death for every tribute. No longer are the people of Panem outwardly tolerant of President Snow's murderous actions. Under the facade of a normal group of Gamemakers, several rebellious citizens have begun an experiment which, if it succeeds, will make use of technology both to rescue the tributes before they are dead and then deposit the brainwashed children back in time. They have to try it. No one knows what horrors future Hunger Games may bring, and the desperate rebels are willing to try anything. Meanwhile, in the mountainous regions of District 2, Cato Hadley and Clove Kentwell have trained their whole lives for the Games. Nevertheless, their ambitions change when they, without meaning to, find themselves in the Games together. They are both determined to win. But if they don't, what will happen to them? The brainwashed tributes who land in New York City know nothing of who they are or where they are from. They do not remember Panem, or the Games, or even their own names. From the treaty of the Treason: In penance for their uprising, each district shall offer up a male and female between the ages of 12 and 18 at a public "Reaping". These tributes shall be delivered to the custody of The Capitol. And then transferred to a public arena where they will fight to the death, until a lone victor remains. Troye and Connor are both highschool seniors, they live next to each other and their parents are good friends. This is why they are forced to go on a camping trip together, and of course they get to share a tent. Troye, however, can't come to a lot of activities because he has really bad migraine. Connor sees this as a perfect opportunity to skip hiking with his family so he stays back to take care of Troye. Both boys start to acknowledge that they really aren't as different as they thought and they start to enjoy each other's company, more than they would have initially wanted.
