This is a true story my Nana told me from when she was growing up in London during the Blitz. I obviously have fictionalized it a bit, but it is a true account. She passed away recently, so I'm writing this as a tribute to her and also so the stories of people who went through World War Two won't be forgotten.

It made it easy for him to get to know her, for him to talk with her smoothly as she worked on his plane, his soft smile igniting her own. It also made the two become close quicker than either of them could have anticipated- it caused romantic feelings that neither of them could ignore to corrupt their minds, something new and exciting sprouting through the thick-concreted walls of war. Brady, the bane of her existence- he was insufferable, always cranky, and for some reason hated her before she could even have a real conversation with him. The hatred was mutual, of course- however, the hatred was quick to morph into something different, something more friendly after the two encountered near-death situations. Tragedy can happen to anyone, anytime and anywhere, and the saddest part about that truth is that tragedy is unavoidable. No one can prevent a natural disaster from happening. No one can prevent death from knocking on their doorstep - if it's an accident, or a sickness - it cannot be prevented, and it cannot be avoided. You never know on which day tragedy will come knocking on your front door. You never know who it would strike next - if it would be you, or someone else, or someone who is very close to you. The thing is, with tragedy, it doesn't ask questions before it strikes. It just does. River and Sophia were two people who experienced the same tragedy: loss, but their stories were very different from each other, but they shared the same pain of losing someone they loved, someone who was close to them.
