"Don't say that." Dan's voice cracked. His eyes burned, threatening to spill tears again, and he knew his breathing was rushed and shaky but he couldn't help it. Why was this happening to him? Why him? 
"Why not?" Phil asked. His voice was strong, confident, as if just to rub it in Dan's face that he was breaking, and breaking alone. "It's the truth. And I would rather you break my heart than not know how I feel."
"Me break your heart?" Dan whispered. His cheeks were wet now and he didn't even attempt to wipe them dry. 
"I love you." Phil repeated.
"Don't say that!" Dan clenched his hands, his head bent and his eyes hidden beneath his bangs. 
"Why not?"
