According to the Kabbalah, in each generation there are thirty-six righteous people who sustain the world and preserve Humanity. These people are unknown and obscure but they bear all the sorrows and sins of the world. They appear and help ordinary people and times of extreme need.
When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, 15 year old Sigi Siegreich and his family fled their hometown near the German border, believing that the war would last at most a few weeks. They had just become homeless.
As life grew more and more difficult for Poland's Jews, Sigi did everything he could to stay alive and support himself, taking part in all manner of daring escapades - from operating a bicycle courier service between ghettos to guarding weapons for the Polish resistance.

She missed Max's countenance gaping mouth and large eyes afflicted by her words. Not only had Max stolen the sky, he stole Liesel's heart too. Now, in Post-WWII Germany, the Allies have brought relief. Life is just beginning to come out of hiding, ready to blossom and flourish as it once did before. No one no longer cowers in fear. But something stirs in Russia: Communism. How will a Jew and innocent German girl make it safely in this ever-changing world that is right out their door? NOTE: This is after The Book Thief story (sequel if you will), so there are some spoilers if you haven't seen/read anything about it. However, if you don't care about the movie/book/spoilers, then it still makes for an eye opening, post-WWII fan fiction. Then again, she did not expect her father to be whisked away in the middle of the night by soldiers, nor did she expect her house to become swallowed by flames of fiery hatred. Yet it all happened in the matter of twenty-four hours. A stubborn, introverted fifteen year old girl, Celina refuses to believe the many stories of the horrific genocide against the Jews, often turning a blind eye to anything that reminds her of the war. But when she unwittingly promises to hide two Jews in a home she does not have, Celina must journey across Europe with these strangers in search of lady who might be able to rescue them. They are filthy, they are broken, and Celina cannot seem to control the hatred burning inside her. Together they travel town to town, witnessing each cities own branch of horrors, even hiding in basements of strangers. In ways painfully unimaginable to Celina, these two Jews affect her life in the deepest of ways.
