According to the Kabbalah, in each generation there are thirty-six righteous people who sustain the world and preserve Humanity. These people are unknown and obscure but they bear all the sorrows and sins of the world. They appear and help ordinary people and times of extreme need. When Germany invaded Poland in 1939, 15 year old Sigi Siegreich and his family fled their hometown near the German border, believing that the war would last at most a few weeks. They had just become homeless. As life grew more and more difficult for Poland's Jews, Sigi did everything he could to stay alive and support himself, taking part in all manner of daring escapades - from operating a bicycle courier service between ghettos to guarding weapons for the Polish resistance.

"Once upon a time, my entire world seemed like a dream. It was no wonder they called Paris the city of love; because sometimes, you just couldn't help but love it. No matter how much it rejected, betrayed, and turned us away, I would always love Paris the way I remembered it. Before it was stolen from us." Kate was grateful she got to have one good birthday. One, last good memory before it all happened. Before the German soldiers performed one of the biggest round-ups, known to World war two. Before nearly forty thousand Jews were deported from Paris. Before Kate, and her family were kicked out of their own city, their own country, and shipped to one of the most notorious concentration camps in Poland. Despite their ill luck, Kate remains forever hopeful. But even the hopeful aren't entirely naïve. Ever since she was a child, Kate has always wanted to be a hero. One of the heroines in her stories, to be specific. But what she doesn't know yet is that she is destined to become part of something bigger. With a boy she gradually realises she's in love with, and newfound friends in unexpected places, can Kate set out to save those she loves and more? Or will her decisions render the lives of not only thousands, but her own?
