SYNOPSIS OF URBAN LOVE Urban Love is the story of Tamika and KK, two young African-American youths navigating the hazards and pitfalls of inner-city urban America while trying at the same time to fight against the cruel hands of destiny that seem intent on pulling their relationship apart. Although KK and Tamika grow up next door to each other in the same poverty-stricken, violence-ridden neighborhood, their experiences within their individual homes are dramatically different—Tamika’s mother being deeply religious, loving, and sober, while KK’s mother is an abusive, spiteful alcoholic mess. So, while both Tamika and KK face the same negative influences around them [poverty and its accompanying train of ill and emotional pain], only Tamika has the intestinal fortitude to overcome the temptations of a gang-plagued, fast-money lifestyle. Although this is an urban/street lit novel [intended to be gritty and realistic], it does contain beneath its surface a socially conscious look into the many substantive issues confronting inner-city youth of today. Although Urban Love is a book that ultimately exposes KK’s many wrong choices, the book’s real goal is to take a frank and honest look into the circumstances and dynamics surrounding those choices.

From the Block to Big Dreams Keisha and Malik have been inseparable since they were kids, growing up together in the same tough neighborhood where making it out takes more than just a dream-it takes hard work, determination, and sacrifice. Keisha, a straight-A student with big plans to become a lawyer, has her sights set on Howard University. Malik, the star athlete with NFL dreams, is heading to USC on a full football scholarship. For years, they've been each other's ride-or-die, the couple everyone knew would make it, no matter what. But when college sends them to opposite coasts, the reality of long-distance love threatens to tear them apart. With new friends, new experiences, and the pressures of building their futures, Keisha and Malik struggle to stay connected across thousands of miles. They promised to make it work, but as time passes, both begin to wonder if love is enough to hold them together when everything else is pulling them apart. Years later, after life has thrown its share of challenges and curveballs, Keisha and Malik find themselves back in the same place where it all began. The question is, can they find their way back to each other after everything has changed, or will the dreams they chased be the thing that keeps them apart? In this urban love story, written in the raw, authentic language of their world, From the Block to Big Dreams explores the highs and lows of young love, the struggles of growing up and apart, and the choices that define who we are and who we're meant to be.
