Aya was a normal, happy little girl, until an event left her to be.. well, not normal.
After the "accident", people shunned her and her mother.
Now, years after her mother's death, Aya is alone, except for a handful of mischievious spirits, she has no one. An unconventional priest is after her life, an obcessed prince wants to put her in a cage and study her, and the guy that caused her "abnormalcy" is close by and she wants revenge.

Each person is able to form a bond with a single spirit. However, there are certain spirits that never approach humans, are known as man-eaters and have marked severe borders on their territory, eating anyone who trespasses on them. Such is the clan of the tailed foxes - the Huli. Lucy has already reached 15 years, so she goes together with her classmates to the Spirit Forest to befriend a spirit and bond with them. However, while sitting around a bonfire and listening to her classmates' scary stories, she remembers the dreadful day of how her house caught fire in past and, worked up, she rushes off into the depths of the forest to cry off her anguish.
