Bitter thoughts of humanity plagued my mind. The little good I once thought the world contained had vanished. Disappearing not just from sight, but from the very hearts of those who once held it. How had it all come to this? My mind struggled to wrap around what I had just witnessed. The cruelty was almost too much to handle and my very thoughts threatened to crush me. I was suffocating.
Blood pooled around the young girl: a sickening cherry color. I limped over to her. A task that proved to be rather difficult, with no real motive. I knew I couldn't save her, I knew it was too late. Worst of all I knew it was my fault. Upon approach I saw an odd glimmer in her eye. Not one of life, rather one of darkness. I felt a sharp pain in my gut and tears pool in my eyes caused by guilt, no doubt. This poor girl. This little girl who had likely just learned to read and tell her family, 'I love you,' shattered by the pain of another. Her life ended far too early. How could I ever live with this?
I dropped to my knees, my face in my hands, body shuttering. I had lost myself as she lost her life. I gave in. My hope was completely gone and submission seemed to be the only answer.
"It's over. I'm done fighting this," I whimpered.
"Good, I'm glad you came around," said the dark masked figure as it stepped into the light of the street lamp. The glare from the lamp failed to illuminate the deep black of its exterior. The shadow like being did not look human.
Fear paralyzed me. I must be stuck in a dream untouched by the shredded reality. Running was a useless thought. Even if I could move my frozen limbs I would never be able to flee the shadows grasp. I felt the movement of the shadow before I saw it. A creeping sensation leaped up my spine.
