It was two thirty in the night and Manika was lying on the floor on several layers of blankets she called bed, staring at the ceiling in complete darkness and struggling with the thought that had cropped up in her mind on various occasions in past few years. Had she actually lived the life she had lived? How could she end up being where she was? Who was responsible for bringing her there? What had she done to deserve the abuse, neglect, humiliation and alienation she had been subjected to? Is it possible for a family to hate one of their own? If only she could ask her mother, "Am I not your child?"
