Evelyn Miradess is a former slave, lifted from a life on the plantations to live a life of magic and luxury in the wealthy Fire Faction. However, each day brings unexpected and nasty revelations about her powers and what it will mean to become a member of the Fire Faction, and she begins to doubt the integrity of the Fire Faction. She scarcely has time to begin her training before a series of unfortunate events whisks her into a mission to save the world - and try not to die in the process.

Nerissa Keyers is the top student in her class of the Air Faction, coming from a wealthy and powerful class of senators and praetors. She was raised in the lap of luxury, living off the finest foods and looking down on the poor her whole life. Her final exam comes along, and she feels nothing but secure in her ability to score highest in her exam and follow her family's traditional trail through society - until she realizes that maybe, just maybe, there is more to life than money and power.

Prince Jared & Princess Katerina are, quite obviously, the prince and princess of the Earth Faction, the poorest faction. Prince Jared travels overseas to the Fire Faction on a diplomatic meeting that he is loathe to attend. He returns to find his home - the Earth Faction - completely destroyed by Zale, the throne overthrown. He reunites with Princess Katerina, and together they set out to avenge their faction and protect all that they've stood for their whole lives.
