Everyone's stuck in a game. If someone from the outside turns off the console, boom. You die. You die in the game, you die in real life. That's just the way it was. They didn't want to lose all of their humanity and become nothing more than animals that hunted the monsters: then they would truly be no better than the monsters themselves.
