Her appearance made her hated. She had few friends, and the friends she did have liked to encourage her to dull down her face with unattractive makeup and clothes that would hide her figure, but of course, in the nicest way possible.
Boys hide from her socially, because clearly, she must already have a boyfriend (she doesn't) and she must be a model (she's not) and they don't stand a chance (but they definitely do).
