Artemis loved her friends more than anything. She would do anything for them, even if it meant sacrificing herself to save them. She was just that type of person. She was there, at the Blackwood Pines getaway. But she wasn't in on the prank nor did she approve of it. When Hannah and Beth went into the woods, Artemis nearly died trying to find them in the heavy snow. But her efforts were in vain, she couldn't find them. So she does what she can do, comforting Josh as best she can. And when Josh invited everyone back to the Blackwood Mountain, she thought it was his way of finally accepting his sisters' death.
