Ashley is a were-beast, a giant werewolf feared by most supernaturals, because of its size and its treachery.  To save the supernatural from the misjudged beast, the Kitsune trapped the were-beast in a crystal ball, coated and stained in mountain ash, and then when a new Kitsune was born, they destroyed the crystal balls, one by one at the nemeton, killing the were-beast inside.

All but one were-beast remained, Ashley. But when Ashley escaped, Scott, the pack and many other hunters try to kill her, as they know of the treachery one were-beast can do, and because several murders were committed since she escaped. 

When Ashley discovers Kira was the new Kitsune, she never trusts her. But when she eventually does, Kira's fox sprit backstabs her, and so begins the fight to destroy the evil spirit.
