Driving through the desert had been Pacey's first mistake that night.  It was pitch black and only one of her headlights were working... barely.  The second was not noticing the position of the stars.  The third was when she hit a wolf.

Pacey Cissak was one of few living Celestials.  She could read the stars as easily as reading a map.  And the stars were telling Pacey not to leave her house that day.  But Pacey had a rogue Nightling to deal with that night.

Until she hit the wolf - the local Packmaster's only son, Neil Long.  Spared grudgingly, he lets Pacey leave but to take his injured son with her and nurse him back to health.  A task she accepts grudgingly since it'll only get in the way of tracking down her fathers' killer.
