It was the 24th Century. Rules had been set down. The law was iron. The world was now known as Pan.
There were the Surs, the wealthy high-class citizens who were allowed to have as many children as they wanted, and own as much land as they could buy. They lived in beautiful neighbourhoods with flourishing trees, emerald green grass, and sparkling water. It was utopia.
There were the Pes, the rest of the population, forced to scrabble on the ground, grovel and beg, fight and kill for their lives. They starved to death, died of sicknesses and were left to rot. They lived in ruins, broken structures, in darkness. It was dystopia.
Until the Creators came. They rose to power, a poor group from Pes, battling their way to the top. They took control of the government and in the height of their fame; released a virus that wiped out the whole of the human population.
Only not quite.
Those who remained of the Surs died out in the streets, unable to survive in the harsh conditions.
Those who remained of the Pes formed gangs, making violence the answer.
For ten long years Pan was chaos.
Until now.
The Creators have resurfaced and offer a city of dreams to all who have survived.
For young William, a man of sixteen, the last Surs citizen in all of Pan, it may be his only hope. But how can he forgive the people who took everything away from him, swallow his pride, and take their sanctuary?
A young woman must compete in a deadly televised competition, Grimm Games, to ensure her twin sister survives.

"Oh, I understand." I didn't blink as I spoke. "But the only way I'm ever stepping foot inside your set is if you force me."
"Our contestants are volunteers," Ms. Holle went on. "We've always run the games that way and forever will. We're not accustomed to forcing anyone to partake, and that opportunity will be extended to you too."
