Amarie Overland's world is color. She paints it, lives it, loves it, and, because of her synesthesia, hears it too. It's the fuel for her magical ability, the figurative and literal highlight of her world. So for her challenge rite, a rite of passage in her magical education designed to test her weakest points, of course her teacher sends her to the darkest, most abandoned part of the city on the night of a new moon. Of course she's scared. Who wouldn't be, even without her dependence on color? But she knows she can handle it. After all, there's nothing out here that can realistically hurt her, nothing that can stand up to her magical ability. (Right?) [Sorry for the big words, I promise the rest of the story isn't that complex. Triptych basically just means trilogy, I just like it better]

Then footsteps go down porch steps and a car starts, then the car sounds fade away and I fall asleep. *** Ivy is a regular eighteen year old. Ivy isn't human and she is just figuring this out.
