Amarie Overland's world is color. She paints it, lives it, loves it, and, because of her synesthesia, hears it too. It's the fuel for her magical ability, the figurative and literal highlight of her world.
So for her challenge rite, a rite of passage in her magical education designed to test her weakest points, of course her teacher sends her to the darkest, most abandoned part of the city on the night of a new moon.
Of course she's scared. Who wouldn't be, even without her dependence on color? But she knows she can handle it. After all, there's nothing out here that can realistically hurt her, nothing that can stand up to her magical ability.

Well, just when I thought my life couldn't get any crazier, guess what? It got crazier. I'm also learning more about the "supernatural world," where apparently, it's where all the ghouls exist and thrive in. And guess what else? I'm going to have to go to school with them. Fantastic. There's a part of me excited, though the larger part is scared to death. Our main character is going to learn that your powers do not define who you are as a person. Arion Griffin lives in a society where people with light magic are 'good' and people with dark magic are 'bad'. He comes from a long line of dark magic. Unfortunately, this causes many problems for his social life since his family's reputation precedes him and makes it so no one will talk with him. He is worried it will make his greatest fear come true. He is terrified he is on the path to becoming evil like his parents. Then, one day at school he gets an invitation from Cassiopeia's School for the Gifted. Sure he's heard of it, but only in rumors. The school is just for magical creatures to learn more about themselves and their history. It was made over three hundred years ago and still run by a fairy named Cassiopea and her daughter Cassia. Arion is excited to go because his parents refuse to teach him anything about other magical creatures other than dark magic. They believe it is irrelevant for him to know because they think he will take over the world one day. And why should a leader know anything about his subjects? Arion convinces his parents that if he goes to the school he can do recon on the other magical people so he can learn about them and make it easier for him to take over. With no friends, no siblings, and a very negative outlook on life, he heads to Cassiopeia's School for the Gifted.
