The positive relationships in the main characters' lives, how sometimes friends and family don't understand, however kindness and humour help. Also, mothers can be made to feel guilty at many different points for different reasons, even when it's over something that isn't the mothers fault. It also has subjects surrounding children diagnosed very early in life with disabilities, the challenges, and breakthroughs that some with it. Themes of stigma and of sympathy.
