Being the President's son means being homeschooled. Being homeschooled means you only get one friend. That one friend, even though you actually like him, is chosen by your parents.
Ashton doesn't want that. He knows being the President's son means it's risky for him to just go out and have fun, but he just needs his family's trust.
So, for his 17th birthday, Ashton requests he could go to the local high school, Melbourne High School. After his parents gradually announce he can go under a false name as his best friend's cousin, Ashton agrees. Calum is like a brother to him, anyways.
He expects everything will be fine. What he doesn't expect, however, is to fall in love with a punk teenager who is also his age.
Luke Hemmings is a delinquent. He smokes, has a lip piercing, swears, has a skateboard, the lot. When new kid "Ashton Hood" arrives, his personality intrigues the punk boy. They get a chance to communicate when being set up for a project together, and feelings grow.
If he wasn't the President's son, Ashton would've immediately jumped at the thought of dating Luke. But his dad is the President. And being gay is not yet legalized in Australia.
"You do know how to eat a burger, right?"
Summer rolled her eyes, looking up at him with feigned exasperation. "Of course I do," she retorted, then lowered her voice as she leaned in, her expression shifting to one of genuine concern. "Do you think they have a fork and knife? So I can, you know... cut it?"
