Set in the village of Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, England,the story follows the lives of Harry Edward Styles, Nial James Horan, Liam James Payne, Zayn Jawaad Malik and Louis William Tomlinson, five boys whose clique falls apart after the disappearance of their best friend, Josh Devine, who was like "the leader" of the group. Harry moves with his family to the U.S. and one year later, when he returns to Holmes Chapel with his family, they begin receiving messages from a mysterious figure using the name "J" who threatens to expose their secrets. At first they think it's Josh himself, but after he is found dead, the boys realize that someone else knows their secrets-including long-hidden ones they thought only Josh knew. The boys continue to find more and more information about J and Josh's disappearance - all while risking their lives.
