Penny is just a normal high school girl from the suburbs of Chicago. She never thought any of this was real. She never meant to put her best friend in danger. And especially never wanted to meet Death face-to-face. A group of six teenagers from across the country have been lifted from their confusing and warped lives in one night. They wake up in an underground cave, with a Shadowed Man in the doorway of the underground room. The Man tells them they have special abilities - cleaning abilities, as he put it. He tells them they are now a team of Cleaners, people who take on special missions, following the destruction a certain man leaves behind as he moves across the globe. Every site they go to has a body, a story, and a mark. Their job is to clean up his mess. They weren't supposed to know any more than that. They were supposed to live the rest of their lives like this. But when Penny listens to a silent conversation between the Man and a stranger, she discovers that their lives have a limit and as they continue the missions, they get closer to death. How they die is uncertain, but they struggle change their fate and free their souls. Now the race is on to answer all their questions and save themselves before it is too late. Who is the Man who collected them? Who is the One whose destruction they follow? What are they absorbing and how is it absorbed? How can they get out?
