Perfect

The world is still breathing, still alive.
So why is it that I'm suffocating?
Dreams die, lives diminish, and in the end there is only darkness.
I'm afraid.
More frightened of her than I've ever been of anything that could destroy me.

"I'm dangerous."
"I know."
"I am nothing but ruin. Toxic."
"I know."
"So why?"
"Because," I tell him. "Maybe someday you will break my heart. Someday I will have no choice but to go back. Someday I will have to suffer heartbreak. Loss. But I would have also had this. How can that be bad?"
"And it's not scary?"
"Nothing's scary when you hold me this way."
He pulls me close to his chest.
I can hear the steadily beating rhythm of his heart.
"I need you," he says. "I need you because you make the darkness seem less scary. Because every time I touch you I need you even more. Because you're perfect."
