Sundancer's life is a mess. The horse she loved kicked her out of his herd and kept their only son. She's stuck as the lead mare of a herd with a stallion who could care less if his entire herd died. Then there's Thunder, a strange yet annoying horse who keeps nagging Sundancer to give him control of her herd. 
Sunpearl is the lead mare of Silverblaze's herd. She's a gentle horse, but an inexperienced leader. She ended up adopting Pepper, Silverblaze's son. 
The catch - Silverblaze was the horse who Sundancer loved and still loves. Pepper is Sundancer's son and doesn't even know. Sundancer is driven by a burning hatred for the entire herd - especially Sunpearl. But one winter when circumstances force the two herds together it seems like both a good and a bad thing. To solve this problem, the mother and father took the twins to Canterlot to explain to Princess Celestia and Princess Luna about their situation. Worried that the family would not be able to afford to take care of both of the children with the bits they currently have, they came to a conclusion that they would separate the two twins. Their mother the unicorn would take Rosie and stay with the Princesses in the castle to Study Magic as Celestia's student, and thunderscore would stay in Cloudsdale with his father the pegasus in a newly built home. They also cast a spell onto both of the twins so that neither of them would remember that they even had a twin. Although they have all that they could ever need, they still can't help but feel like they are missing something from their lives.
