All that was left was me. The burning surrounded me, and I sat, calm as ever, as I waited for the flames to stop.

Ever since Ember was abandoned in a dark building that burned down on her 16th birthday for no reason, she's been cursed. Every person she's cared about would forget her. And she'd be there every time, sitting calmly, the ember of the fire. So what happens when a camp of boys come? Don't fall for it, don't fall for it, she says. And then she doesn't. Instead, she sits in the medical tent, healing over as she listens to each of the boys tell their stories, a big story, written piece by piece, until all that's left to feel is sorrow, and all that's left to come is the fire. So why doesn't it?
