The ceiling fan creaked to a stop above her. Her nails gripped the cool edge of the metal table while she hung her head low. She was going insane. Officially. She knew it. She heard footsteps approach the door of the one-way mirrored room. She flung a piece of her red hair behind her ear before he entered silently and strode to stand and face her on the opposite side of the table. He fastened his badge over his shoulder and took a sip of the coffee from the blank, off-white mug on his desk. He looked over a few pieces of paper, then up at her, then back again. While fixating a bright lamp on her face, he began by asking a simple question: "so you know why we brought you down here, correct? Where were you on the night Mason Addams went missing?" Just hearing his name made her think of the memories; the sweet disasters that made her stomach flutter and her adrenaline levels skyrocket. It was like she was driving a car on a twisted mountain road while keeping her eyes on the rearview mirror. All hell was waiting for her ahead, but all she could focus on was her past.

I shifted uncomfortably in my seat as he stared across the table at me. I could seriously drown in his eyes. He was intoxicatingly attractive and he had to know it. That's why he was acting strange around me. For some reason, he looked at me as if I was the only one there with him. As if nobody else were here. And his voice... it pained me. It actually pained me with how utterly seductive and husky it always sounded. And the way he smelled all the time. I don't know why he smelled so strong, but I didn't mind. He smelled like evergreens and a hint of mint. It sounds like a bad combo, but it dizzied me with how lost I got in it. The thought of not being able to control myself, my thoughts and feelings and body when I'm around him, infuriated me. I was so good at holding myself together now, and he just unraveled me so easily, leaving me a mess. I wasn't the slightest bit afraid of him, and I had no idea why either. Just being in the same room, I felt like I didn't have to look over my shoulder. I didn't have to worry. I didn't even know who he was, and he still drew me in. "So, you were in California before? Why did you move?" Grace Hatfield asked, looking at him. She is our school's college and career advisor. She took me in and adopted me a couple years ago. She even gave me her last name. A saving grace. Why had she invited him here? Why did he come? He turned to her with a smile and a shrug. "Guess I just hadn't found what I was looking for yet." Something about the way he said it, sent a shiver down my spine. Why did I feel like there was so much more meaning behind his words than he was letting on? "Well, I hope you find what you're looking for." Grace said, and he turned to me with a devilish smirk and a mischievous glint in his eyes. "Something tells me that I will."

**1st Draft, this will eventually be edited!** He heard voices coming from elsewhere as he rang the fancy bell for service. "I'll get it!" he heard a muffled small voice say before a young girl came from the door behind the counter "Hello Sir! And welcome to the Boardinghouse." The young girl said cheerfully. "Hello Miss, I would like a room." George said with a smile, the young girl had bouncy red curls and large icy blue eyes that were the same color as his own. Her smile seemed familiar but he knew he hadn't met the small girl before, yet the one before him seemed very familiar. "I don't know how to do that..." She said with a frown "Wait here I'll go get my Mama!" George smiled as she ran back through the doors yelling for her Mother. "Belinda Grace! It's not polite to shout indoors! You know that." He heard a familiar voice say, a voice he hadn't heard in around eight years. Scarlett his heart raced almost instantly as the very woman who filled his each and every dream for the past eight years walked out the door and greeted him. She seemed to have gotten even more beautiful if that were even possible. Her red hair no longer was confided to a fancy bun or hairstyle. It now fell past her waist in thick waves free and unruly while her bangs fell into her hauntingly beautiful Gray eyes. She had a simple smile on her face showing faint dimples on either side of her cheeks. Her skin was still the color of ivory but now housed several freckles which only made her more becoming. "How may I help you?" Scarlett asked bringing him from his thoughts. "Oh um... I-I'd like a room... with a bath." He said thankful for his overgrown facial hair. She didn't recognize him, and he was fine with that. He wasn't ready to face his wife he ran out on eight years ago.

"What reason do I have to lie?" He looked up at me with squinted eyes. "Hmm, Maybe because YOU KIDNAPPED ME?" I yelled at him, throwing whatever was closest to me, which happened to be the plate I had just eaten off of. The plate missed his head but hit the wall behind him with a thump, it shattered to pieces onto the couch, food splattering all over. His eyes glazed over with anger. "Did you just throw that at my head?" He asked in a scary calm tone. I gulped, "Maybe if you weren't such an asshole I wouldn't have." I spoke, my voice shaking as much as my body was. "I'm not an asshole!" He yelled at me as he stood to his feet, and in two long strides made his way over to me. He grabbed me by the arms and pushed his face inches away from mine. Wanting to push his buttons, I did the only thing I could think of. "Only an asshole would say that." I told him, my voice low. I was mad and I wanted to see what he would do. He held my arms down. I laughed in his face, "What are you gonna do? Hit me?" I pushed, I wanted to prove a point, I wanted to show him how much of a monster he truly is. He released his grip, "No. No I'm not." He stood up and walked towards the door, running his hands through his hair. I was surprised, but decided to push further, to see how far I could actually push him. "Why not? You've done it before." I pointed out, my confidence growing now that he didn't hit me for that. He leaned on the door frame, his back to me. "Because I can't do it!" He yelled, turning around to face me. He strode towards me, anger fuming off of him. I cowarded away from him, scared he was going to hit me again. But, I wanted him to, just to make a point, but he did something that surprised me a lot more. He kissed me. *** April Hastings, a seemingly normal girl is abducted by her handsome boss. Learning that the abduction was not ill intended, she starts to fall in love. *FIRST BOOK OF "IN THE SHADOWS" SERIES!*
