At first, there was just the whooshing of the waves. But then there was the salty air. The feel of scalding sand under her fingertips. A few birds chattered, others sang.
The young girl attempted to open her eyes, but to no avail. Her eyelashes were sealed shut by the ocean salt, forcing her to remain temporarily blind.
Weakly, she sat up, her hands gripping the harsh terrain. She immediately inhaled sharply, spluttering and coughing up acidic sea foam.
'There's no way I can be alive...' She rubbed her eyes, scratching away the cluttered waste and finally opening them. 'Right?'
"Hello?" Her voice sounded squeaky and dry. "Anyone? Is there anyone here?"
She pushed herself up onto her elbows, roughly rubbing them against the sand. A sudden blanket of calmness washed over her, forcing her to close her eyes and stop the cold whisper of the word 'water' in her head...
