Eric was the younger of twelve year old twins, just approaching their thirteenth birthday. Although only six minutes younger than Lauren, she was clearly the alpha character when it came to sibling rivalry; she had an effervescent outgoing personality and exuded confidence in everything that she did. Eric, on the other hand, was introverted and largely lived his life in under the shadow of his sister. That was until Eric was diagnosed with a life threatening condition. Admitted to hospital for emergency life-changing surgery. Waking up a different person there was a new-found confidence and optimism that results in a metamorphosis into a life that is far from the shadows. Born out of Covid-19 lockdown, this was conceived as a light-hearted short story to counteract the doom and gloom that was resulting from the pandemic. It grew longer than expected, as I got to know Erin. The story might still be a bit rough round the edges, but I wanted to release it in time for summer vacation reading. There is no violence or hatred, just kindness and acceptance. For those that discount this as unrealistic of the real world, I counter two arguments: 1) It is a complete work of fiction. 2) My son went to Lycee (Senior secondary school) in rural France, where attitudes are generally very conservative. Despite this, there was a girl his his year, who believed she should have been a boy. HE was accepted for who he was, without prejudice. Hopefully it offers a little light reading with a happy ending. Not that the story is set in Scotland and the spelling reflects British convention, perhaps with some Scottish dialect thrown in.
A Three-Way War by mockingjay379
1 part Complete
Set in the era of the Civil War, Ann has always struggled with her position in life. Seen as a useless girl to her family, Ann tries to see better of herself but feels herself falling to her family's views. She feels like she can't do anything, especially when her older brother, Martin, is conscripted to the war effort, where Ann is sure he will die. In a whirlwind decision, she decides to disguise herself as a male soldier, impersonating Martin and going off to war. Florence is an African-American girl with a fire in her heart. She's gutsy, with enough bravado to put the mightiest warriors to shame. A long-time friend of Ann's, Florence knows how it feels to be looked down on. But she can feel her warrior's heart inside her, urging her to fight in the Civil War, to fight for the freedom of her people. Unleashed anger and frustration burn in her bloodstream, begging to be set free. But how can she fight, when she's just a girl? Hugh is a seemingly selfish, self-conceded Southern boy who has been conscripted to fight the North. As the war rages on, he struggles to choose a side, indecision tearing at him. He knows that while one choice might be morally right, he knows that choosing that side could rip him from the beliefs his family has instilled in him since the day he was born. In a brutal twist of fate, all three of their lives collide, when Hugh, Florence, and Ann meet each other on the bloody battlefield of Gettysburg. But will they put aside their prejudices for survival? Or will they let themselves be torn apart by the worries and doubt that cloud all their minds?

Book IV of the Oblivion Saga "Keys are proof that even locks believe in freedom." -Unknown ... Alice D'Voux. An aspiring young artist whose past was written in places designed to break people quietly. She's lived the majority of her life in silence - partly by choice, partly out of survival. Haunted by tragedy, she carries her words in her hands instead of her voice. Therapy, routine, distraction...none of it can quiet the fire burning steadily underneath her skin. By a chance occurrence - or maybe the Universe's way of throwing a curve ball - she meets the last person you'd expect to see in a mental health clinic if they weren't dragged there. James "Bucky" Barnes. A man who knows what it means to be turned into something he never consented to. The Winter Soldier - the name the world gave him when it decided what he was, and the truth that redemption is a lock he doesn't feel worthy enough to pick. Neither of them are looking for connection. But when Bucky's path crosses with Alice's, they both see a reflection that they can't ignore: scars, survival, and a fight to believe in freedom. What starts as a chance encounter quickly turns dangerous as the systems that shaped them refuse to stay buried. Alice and Bucky are thrown headfirst back in with organizations that profit from turning people into weapons. Because in a world set on forging monsters, survival may come down to one impossible choice: stay silent and intact - or let the fire speak, no matter the cost. ***DISCLAIMER*** I DO NOT OWN ANY OF THE MARVEL CHARACTERS/PLOTLINES THAT MAY BE MENTIONED IN THIS BOOK.
