Alex lives in Britain but has always wanted to come to the Americas. Since he was a junior in high school (11th grade I think) he figured that going to the U.S. and becoming one of those foreign exchange students for the last two remaining years of his school career would be a fun challenge.
Jack would alway complain to his mom about wanting a brother or something because he was bored/lonely. Now it's not like he didn't really have any friends, it's just that they we're all internet friends living who knows where, other than his only non-virtual best friend Melanie.
After all the complaining from her son about wanting maybe a brother or something, she decided that housing a foreign exchange student would do the two of them good.
