Phoenix-River's best friend is dead, and his parents are going through a divorce. Facing depression, his one consolation is dancing, doing so each night till he passes out.

Blaire can't help but compare herself to other girls, self-hate has become second nature. After it's accumulated for a while, she gets an untamable eating disorder.

Marina is about as famous as an eighth grader can get, and having just ended her show, she convinces her mother to move to Omaha, Nebraska, to meet her aunt and uncle. Feeling as if her life is spiraling out of her own control, she takes foolish and dangerous risks to feel like she is in control once more.

Aren's mother died of cancer when he was young, and his father is always drunk. He lives in constant fear of his gay-hating father, knowing that sooner or later the truth would come out.

Four eighth-graders with their own problems meet, and, inevitably, fall apart.
