This is 1920s America. Southern America. Thomas Ives is 14 years old. And black. His best friend, Carter Divern is gay and Carter's lover, Johan, is Jewish. When the 'Jim Crow Laws' passed, Thomas' mother and father are killed by white supremacists. He then decides, with his friends, to take his little sister, Rudy, to the north, where he heard it was much safer for them... The Jim Crow laws were state and local laws enforcing racial segregation in the Southern United States. Enacted after the Reconstruction period, these laws continued in force until 1965. They mandated de jure racial segregation in all public facilities in states of the former Confederate States of America, starting in 1890 with a "separate but equal" status for African Americans.
