Humans are born with a soulmate, but this soulmate isn't human.

The soulmates are born on a world called the Shadow Domain. Each soulmate is meant for one human, and they are born to be a companion to that human. Their human is the only one who can see them, and the soulmate has to wait hundreds of years before they can finally meet. If the soulmate is rejected, they have to live forever, never getting another chance at happiness.

James, a newly born soulmate, learns what life is like in the Shadows, while waiting 936 years before he can meet his human. As time moves slowly, he starts to grow attached to the people and places in the Shadows, particularly a girl names Cecilia, a rejected soulmate working in his apartment.
