This is the story of how I died... just kidding. Still alive. It's just that "the story of how I almost died but lived on to tell the tale" doesn't sound half as interesting. *** Sarcastic, seventeen-year-old Cal has never seen the sun. It's no wonder, since ravaging solar flares seeping through the fractured ozone layer turned the earth to dust and desert and unleashed a massive amount of radioactivity, forcing the remainder of humanity underground. The leaders of the subterranean settlement, nicknamed the Vault by its inhabitants, made sure no one ventured outside. But now the days of the solar flares have passed, yet the people are still locked inside - for their own safety. Or is there more to the Vault than the leaders are willing to say? Each month an ominous "Selection" takes place underground, in which two people are picked to help the government with a project; to be selected is regarded as a high honor. Cal is eager to find out what secrets the government hides from its citizens and what lies behind her cage of stone and stalagmites, but is she actually prepared to deal with what she discovers? And when she uncovers the truth, how will she deal with the fact that nobody, including herself, is who they think they are? If Cal set out looking for answers and adventure, she's found them. *** This is a first draft, so it's far from perfect. Constructive criticism is welcome. If it's not your kind of thing, just don't keep reading. This is also my first attempt at writing anything besides shit for school, so bear with me, guys. :)

My eyes were literally glowing, there was no mistaking it. It was not a reflection of light, or any of the other excuses I had used or others had assumed. They were glowing a light sapphire blue color. It was not a bright glow, but it was definitely a glow. Glowing eyes were not normal. Okay, at this point I had to admit it, I was no longer normal. What was I then? For that, I had no answer [[Word count: 495,000]] Copyright August 2016. All Rights Reserved. Readers may not copy, alter, or steal this story.
