When seventeen-year-old Eliza Witheree's family is taken to a safe haven in Washington D.C by the National Guard after an international bioterrorist group threatens the world with nuclear weapons, Eliza and her baby sister are accidentally left behind. Eliza quickly learns the bombs launched by the bioterrorist group are no ordinary nuclear weapons: the radiation that poisons the air proceeding the initial bomb blast does not affect children, and it leaves some adults zombified. Thrust into a world of flesh-eating monsters who were once adults, shadow-playgrounds of cities, children waging war on each other, and terrorists in hazmat suits kidnapping children, Eliza has three goals: Survive, keep her little sister safe, and get the hell to Washington DC so she can find the rest of her family. The world has ended, and it will push a sharp-witted, nerdy young woman to extremes as every odd is stacked against her. Stay low. Kill first. Die last.

Before the world ended, Zephyris thought fear was just a feeling. Now it's the rhythm of her heartbeat. When a single day shatters the illusion of safety, she and her best friend are thrust into a world collapsing faster than they can understand. What begins as confusion turns to chaos, and survival stops being instinct- it becomes the only thing left. She and her best friend must navigate a reality that demands too much from the young and gives nothing back. In a place where innocence is a luxury, Zephyris learns that sometimes surviving isn't living- it's just the way life goes. Growing up was hard enough before the end of the world. Now it's all that's left to do.
