"Can I ask you a question?" Death looked up from his book on his lap, glasses sliding down his nose as he stared at me; eyebrows raised.
"It's a really serious question. A matter of life and death if you may" Death placed the book on the table beside him and crossed his arms, his muscles visibly tensing and he tried to relax into the seat.
"What is it Ash?" I could clearly see this was making him uncomfortable and I snickered under my breath.
"You have to be completely honest Death, can you promise me this?" He gave a slight nod, he reached up and took off his glasses and placed them alongside the book; this was getting serious.
"Come out with it then Ash"
"On second thought... Maybe I shouldn't ask you" I scratched the back of neck, feigning nervousness.
"We're both friends, good friends, I think I can handle what you ask" I think he actually gulped. I was struggling not to ruin my poker face; a smile threatening to show through.
"Okay... I think I'll ask you. Just promise not to laugh at me, please" I stuck out my lip, pouting like a child would. I think I deserve an Oscar, my acting skills are brilliant.
Death scooted closer to me on the couch we both sat on, taking my hand in his as he stared into my eyes.
"Ask me Ash"
"Okay, well..." I took a deep breath, exhaled and waited 10 seconds, watching as he visibly restrained himself from bolting from the room.
I couldn't hold this facade anymore, I had to end this now otherwise it would be ruined.
I took another breath.
"Do you know the muffin man?"
He broke my fingers.

*****
After a summer spent in the Philippines, Lara Dela Cruz is eager to start her senior year and, most importantly, reunite with her three besties. But what she did not expect was to show up on the first day of school to all three of her friends now in relationships. Fighting for their attention, catching some new and confusing feelings for long-time frenemy James, and wading through the pressures of post-high-school plans all have Lara reeling. And to make matters worse, Lara's beautiful and untrustworthy cousin conveniently appears and wiggles her way right between her and James' budding relationship. Feeling like a third wheel in more ways than one, Lara must learn to accept that change is inevitable, love is complicated, and being the odd one out is sometimes where inner power is found.
