In the countryside village of Westbrook, Constable Artemis has just returned from vacation with his daughter, only to learn that there is a new Sherriff in town, of whom has taken an instant disliking to him. But professional rivalry aside, both of them are about to receive some terrible news: the village's farmhouse has been burned down to ashes and twenty year old, David Amell has sadly perished in the flames. For the Sherriff it's a personal blow; as his last case as a detective years ago was dealing with an arsenic which had dismantled his reputation.
Neither of them could believe anyone in Westbrook would ever have harmed David; but as more evidence piles up, with help from DS Morse, it seems to indicate that he had been murdered. The fire was no accident. It's a living nightmare for everyone involved even before the press arrive and start stirring up the secrets every village member keeps hidden behind closed doors.
When gunpowder is found in the basement of the farmhouse, the police begin to wonder if it was an inside job after all. Who would go to so much trouble to burning down an entire farmhouse, just to kill one man? Everything is revealed when Constable Artemis threatens to leave no stone unturned - but will the kidnapping of his daughter distract him from the upcoming battle ahead?
