No, Hazel didn't think she had a normal life.  She knew her life would never be normal- after all, she could hear voices in her head and lived in an orphanage.  However, her life gets even more not normal when she meets Ao and Oa Hina, who bring her into a battle group fighting in a war of magic.  As it turns out, the voices are actually thoughts- that she reads from other people's minds!  Along with Ao, Oa and a mess of other odd characters, Hazel must fight against the army of the dark, which seeks to plunge the world into eternal darkness.  So no, Hazel Strauss is not normal.
