Sia is a year away from ascending to be the next Protector, the one tasked with keeping her people safe and hidden from the humans. But when someone starts murdering her clan and her mentor is killed, Sia must take on the responsibility before she's ready. Her clan falls even farther in chaos and their magic is threatening to shatter.
If it does, they risk exposure to humans and Sia already has reason to believe the killer is a human from the village outside their sanctuary. Her clan ignores her, choosing to do things on their own, her parents warn her of getting too close to the humans, and a human boy can see her.
Sia runs out of options and must turn to her enemy for answers, she just has to be careful not to fall in love.
