There's a difference between surviving and living. In Tonicfalls, you have to do both.
Living your life knowing one day your not going to have a one to live is scary. But knowing exactly when you die is about 10x worse. A curse was let upon the citizens of Tonicfalls, giving them a certain amount of steps to live, teaching them a lesson. Everything comes with a price.
