Kyla Johansen is deaf. She knows that. What she doesn't know is how cruel the kids outside of Greenfeld School for the Deaf could really be... especially in a tiny town on the coast of Rhode Island.
When Kyla's dad is transferred for work, she's forced to pack up and move like a good amount of other teens her age do from time to time. But moving from Greenfeld City, California to Central Falls, Rhode Island is a major change. At first, Kyla is the "new girl." She sees all the fifty kids in her grade whispering and smiling at her as she passes by. Kyla smiles back. They say "hi." Kyla, whose lip-reading skills are top notch, says "hi" back. Everything is great... until they find out she can't hear.
