In the basement of an abandoned home on the corner of 41st Street, underneath piles of dirty clothes and dusty books, there lay an old wooden box. It looked ordinary enough; with four thin, wooden stumps and a brass latch, but it was what was inside that was most curious. Inside, faded and torn with time, were love letters.

A letter found in a hidden room sends Raven on a life-changing journey. Mourning the loss of her father killed in a car accident, Raven leaves her city life behind to return to the family ranch that she inherited. However, after ten years of neglect, the ranch requires renovating. During the renovation, Raven learns there had once been another room now sealed away by a false wall. When the false wall comes down, an old study, dating back to the nineteenth century, is uncovered. While searching through an old writing desk, Raven finds an unsent letter hidden away in the drawer. The letter describes a forbidden relationship between a man named Viggo Astor in love with a woman betrothed to another man with arrangements for them to run away together. Besides the letter, all that's left of Viggo's existence is his luggage and an old newspaper clipping about Rome, Italy. Curious about what became of Viggo, Raven's obsessive search takes her to Rome, Italy, to find out the answers. Along the way, she meets a mysterious stranger, gets caught in the middle of a dangerous game, and learns the truth of what happened the night her father died.
