In 1836 Charles Macintosh researched and developed a method of combining fabric with rubber. This process was first used in the manufacture of the so called "mackintosh" or better known as the "mac", today many of the raincoats worn today are in some shape or form still related to the original design.
The original raincoat made its first practical appearance during world war one with soldiers wearing the "trench coat", this was made of gabardine material, a mixture of yearn and cotton and by applying chemical agents these coats became water proof, the gabardine grew in popularity throughout the early 1900's.
During 1900s vinyl became very popular and new methods of manufacturing raincoats became more and more advanced well into the 1970s. Today modern raincoats variants of fabrics now include Gore-Tex and a mixture of modern day plastics, all extremely flexible and waterproof.
