After WW III and stuff began to go back to normal, a Kingdom rose up and took control over America and renamed it Illea. The caste system was born. The people living in the palace, the royals, are One's, and the people who steal to live and sleep on the streets are Eight's. Every time that the Prince or Princess comes of age they host a Selection, 35 girls or boys are chosen among all of the castes to go into the palace. To compete for the heart of the royals, and the public, but most of all. . . for the crown. 

Sydney Palmer is a regular Seven who just wants to provide for her family. But she's got some secrets that could get her killed. Also her mother is a rebel, and no one knows if she's a Northern or a Southern. When she goes into the Selection for family purposes, will all of her secrets come unraveled? Her lies will become larger. Will she find her mom? Does she find love? Is it with the Prince?
